(This topic is for people who have seen the episode to discuss it. If you don't want to be spoiled, don't read this topic.)
This was an interesting episode. Amanda Tapping was billed at the start, and at the end she said only one word. Which is nonsense. Even though this episode was funny, how we got to see Kavanagh complain about Dr. Weir to O'Neill. Still, this episode wasn't the best one but it was still fun to watch.
It was cool enough
the building for our great finale
Pretty good for a clip show. The SFX during the culling were nice. Weir still annoys me.
One note: have these people ever heard of the pause or rewind button? How much DV tape can you waste?
Edit: I thought they had 20 eps instead of 22 to save money, and we still get a clip show? How cheap!
cant help but feel that the writters were cheating when they came up with how to dial back to earth, but overall not a bad eppy, the close ups of the hiveships were great, at least if the atlantis guys get beat up it'll be done by a cool looking enemy, i do think they got a little too hung up on the whole where do you cross the line issue
Does sheppard have no family? I guess thats what he meant by "I'm not sure he has a family, not all of us do". Obviously the reason he didnt send a message...
I wonder what happened to them.
This episode has changed atlantis for me, I think it got everything right I liked it before but the last few episodes are really setting it apart from SG1 for me. The characters are really starting to flesh out and its just so damn interesting to watch now.
Also...what was the big beam that the wraith hive ship shot down at the planet?

Yah, it was my understanding that the ZPM was required to make the connection, and once that was done, the gate draws engery elsewhere to maintain the wormhole.. (remember hearing something of that nature in a previous episode)
In the Episode "Home" Mckay suggests to Gen Hammond that although the ZPM was almost depleted it would only be needed for 3.5 Microseconds to get an Eight Chevron Lock, after that the Planet's Electrical Field would sustain the wormhole.
He used the Reverse Charge Analogy to convince Hammond to try.
How did they manage to cheat and dial Earth in this Eps,I'm in Australia and the D/L's seem to be getting harder to get hold of ???
They used naquada generators to power the gate (which would only be established for 1.3 seconds, according to McKay), and sent highly-compressed data through it.
I thought the ep was alrite. It was a bit of a cheat by the writers i think...
It would have been good to see what the SGC made of it, would have made the ep much better, or worse if they had to cram the stuff in (probably couldn't have gone off planet). Well I hope they do a bit on it in some future SG1. Since Atlantis can send a message, the SGC can too (they did just use naquada generators?). So they will be able to respond, tell them the Prometheus will be there... or something.
toddy67: I find it pretty easy to get them...350MB eps, started at about 2pm today (Tuesday) finished about 10pm. I use bittorents, TorrentSpy.com. (oh i use torrent storm program).
Not the worst clip show (SG-1's were unbearable) I'd say.
Plus more attention was on the letters and the culling rather than the actual clips.
The Sheppard/Teyla conflict was a bit lame and overdone, though...
Perhaps that big beam was some sort of collector, after the victims are caught the "big" beam "collects" them and transports them up to the hive ship to save time and trouble of getting them off each individual fighter ship.
And damn, who else was counting down the minutes, fearing such a pathetic appearance of Carter?
You couldn't call it a clip show as most of the show was new stuff and the story focused far more on the culling of the village and the messages home then the clips.
I think the Sheppard and Teyla conflict on the Puddle Jumper was very well, i am starting to suspect that their is a romantic future possible for the two of them, maybe in a few more series time.
The Wraith ships look very cool, amazing to see and i can't wait to find out how Atlantis and Earth can take on the Wraith ships. It was also great to see all the different characters of Atlantis and how they approached doing the video recording and saying goodbye, some were very sad, others took the time to complain, and Mckay was very funny when doing it. Mckay, is the character that seems to evolved the most, since we first saw him back in Sg1.
I liked this episode. Altho the ending could have been better. Maybe seen SGC do something else, although kinda a good cliff hanger. It was a bit sad at the end with them all saying goodbye.
Should make for an interesting rest of series anyhoo.
I like this episode. It was filled with emotion and McKay was just too funny
![]()
Though there were some bad parts for example when Carter received the message, they should have done something like rush up and tell O'Neill or something. The good-bye part was very sad.. as I said; this episode was filled with emotional feelings. The producers/writters did some good thinking here, they actually made an episode where it would be all about emotions.
? Sheppard had to choose whether or not to stay and wait for Oron's family or leave.
? McKay talked something very nice about his sister.. and of course leadership lol
? Shaq and Kobe? lol He's so far off there. Shaq switched teams!
And so on..
It looks like the only clip we will see from the SGC looking at them will be Dr. McKay's. After all, David Hewlett according to imdb is credited with the part of Dr. McKay, and it falls in perfect timing when this airs on SciFi. 819 Morpheus I think it is called is the episode with Dr. McKay. Which means it would come on the same week as 118 Gift. Still, this was a good episode for the most part.
Very emotional episode, little less of the family story and more of reaction from SGC as said above would have been preferred. McKay was slightly weird, but it was near a tear-jerker especially when Carson never burst in tears. I thought Simon had security clearance and how come they didn't realise that 8 chevrons were lit back at the SGC and not the usual 7 -- strange. All in all, a very good attempt at an emotional story and hopefully will not be the last.
Worth 8/10
Ok I think it was a great episode, BUT they way they got the stargate up and running with those naquada generators is just strange. I mean they are empty now right? What do they use for power now? Especially if you know there is an armada of enemy ships comming. O well the writers didn't realy think of that one I think (or I didn't pay attansion).
Ok last tiny thing, if they can get a gate from atlantis with those naquada generators then why can't the SGC on earth. I mean they got TONS of naquada generators. Hell they make them. So very strange that they can't get a gate open to Atlantis unless offcourse they never though of the idea.
Have you notice that the briefing/conference room table changed again? And why is the stargate lit up like that, one moment when idle, it's lit up, next time it's not lit up, what's up with that?!
And Carter's hair looks great as usual. And I think Weir should have gated and dump that Doctor-whiner somewhere. He so deserves it.
I thought this was a good episode. Perhaps its just me, but did anyone else notice how the directing and "style" for this episode seemed to be kind of reminiscent of, say, SG1 "Heroes"?
Yeah, it reminded me of Heroes as well, although Heroes was better. The way that comedy turned into a complete tragedy (at least for those watchers who liked Dr. Fraiser) was done very well.
*sigh* yeah, It would've been great if this had been a 2-parter.
At least the entire episode wasn't based in the puddle jumper as was speculated in the spoilers thread
The briefing table is also the same one as used in a sg-1 episode. I think it was one of the Prometheus ones, possibly the one where they become stranded in space after the buffer for the generators fries or something.
they also used a puddle jumper inconjuction with the generators to power the gate
alright episode, skipped through the clips part, and apart from that the 15 mins that i watched it was good, weakest episode
5/10
In seeing this episode, I don't understand really why MGM would allow Atlantis to be aired not simulataneously with Stargate SG-1. Clearly some cross-overs are starting to happen.
Never the less, I watched the episode. I agree that it was pretty cheesy. We learned the Wraith were coming in the previous episode. I hope that one thing this does is effect the Stargate SGC crew in a better episode.
But you gotta agree with this, the Japanese scientist was hilarious -- she thought McKay was brave? That she was willing to serve at his pleasure?
Also, did you guys notice how the Wraith ships exited hyperspace and how similar it looked to how ships in Startrek entered and exited warp? The ships were elongated as they came out. Usually they don't do that with the ships in SG-1. They just normally drop out of hyperspace with that flash.
Im generally not impressed with clip shows (it def was one), having said that this ep made me laugh a bit. There was a bit of new footage too.
Look forward to seeing earth's response. I guess they are building towards a big season finale, but this did seem to be bit of a waste of an episode.
Mckay was funny as always.
Weir is really annoys me.. enjoyed the part where Karangh complained.
Probably a very minor point but i didnt think sheppard should have left the ship given that he was the only one who could fly home.. if he wanted a closer look y didnt he just fly there?
I dont think atlantis compares to the early episodes of sg1, but i am definately addicted.
Im in aust too, have no prob getting eps but always seem to hav them much later than the rest of u.
Zelenka: ?At the bottom of the sea; we have got a (failsafe)? mechanism. It pulled out an anchor of the city from the bottom of the sea by a huge force. We were terrified? we were terrified by that. Unbelievable! What is happening? And what a hubbub! Whole city was fluttering like during an earthquake. It was something unbelievable. And suddenly?eh?we were moving! Whole city was rising up and up to the surface of a sea. It was something unbelievable! The towers broke through the surface of the sea and we were rising up and up. Such an amount of water! The waves! Waterfalls! All flowing down from such an altitude. We shoot up, up to the sky? and suddenly? sun? simply the beautiful sun. It was shining through all windows? I will remember that? I will remember that my whole life??
Ford: ?You didn?t say anything that would require security clearance, did you??
Zelenka: ?Security Clearance??
Yeah, thanks for the translation.
It was pretty obvious, but it also could've been something like "I can't work with these actors" like last time.
Ep was ok.
I absolutely hated Weir in it though. Teyla annoyed me too..
By the way, anyone wants to guess what Zelenka said in the final sequence?
I just realised that I answered my own question when the gate opened in the SGC, all the chevrons now light up, as to solve the incoming wormhole problem. Therefore, all 9 chevrons would have lit up, therefore wouldn't have been able to tell that it was from another galaxy.
Teyla annoyed me but overall I really liked this episode... even though it was a clip episode (but only like 5 minutes worth i thought).
The naquada generators have a maximum energy output before going critical. Apparently 5 generators channeling their energy to the stargate can open a wormhole for a little more than a second. The generators wouldn't be "used up" in the process. If anything is used up at all, it would be the naquada fuel. If they brought 6 original generators with them, then surely they brought more naquada incase they needed to refuel them. Infact, the component Sheppard removed from the generator in The Eye probably contained the naquada fuel.
this has to be the best clip show that i've seen...it wasn't all focused on past episodes and like..it was when one of them was talking about something...and it's not like they focused on one scene for 2-5 minutes instead it was a lot of different clips put together which i found really enjoyable.
I have to say that Weir actually gave me a headache this episode, her voice grated on my ears...i think that she needs to change her tone.
Teyla had more of a role but it seemed like she was angry or sulky but that's explainable because she was upset about the culling which was about to happen.
A military officer filming people? well, i guess there was nothing better for Ford to do.
I think it was sweet how Sheppard did the...tape for sumners family and i think that for Weir to give it to a military officer, it was the right thing to do...for some reason it just seems fitting that the guy who took over military control after Sumner died, that he should then do the tape.
Amanda Tapping said one word...Darnation, Gary Jones had more words than her! but i guess it's about time we saw her...the only one we haven't seen is Teal'c but how would he be brought into an episode? he has no exact role.
Carson...hehe, how funny was it when he started crying and goes: I can't do this!
He was a good part to watch.
Mckay...well, he certainly knows how to babble on but did anyone say to him...Security clearance? he would have had to have known that there were some things that he wouldn't be allowed to say.
I think that we finally saw some heartfelt emotion from him...with the message he filmed for his sister...
I think we are actually starting to see some emotion from Atlantis and we are getting to know them a lot better.
This episode made me cry a little bit...
So...Are we all hinking John Sheppard has no family?

The episode was good. Its good to know that Earth learns about the Wraith from the message.
By the way did anyone notice that when Sheppard was dialing the gate to Atlantis from the planet, you hear him dialing 8 chevrons. He should have only dialed 7.
maybe that 8th thing he clicked was just the thing which...like, activated the gate? like on the DHD u press that red thing?
i would have guessed that she was Korean.
My mum kept laughing when she came on the screen because of those big glasses...she looked tiny underneath.
Teyla has feelings!! But she's so wooden! She just wanted to save more of her people. They are so dumb though. Ship them to the Goa'uld they would make good hosts! LOL
Whoa, Sinicism overload!
Oh well. It was a good EP. They are really building the suspense up for the finale.
I wish we could have seen a little wraith butt kicking. ![]()
Can't wait until "The Siege"![]()
Teyla seemed quite annoying in this episode.
And wouldn't Mckay know that basically everything he said was highly classified?
and while it wouldn't matter that he was wearing his uniform he talked about the wraith.
if there are so many naqauda generators why did they not hook them all up and try to sustain the wormhole alot longer
I really liked this. It was fun to watch everyone filming their messages home, but at the same time it was really scary to watch the culling, and I was impressed with the way they got both themes into the episode.
I really like episodes where we learn about characters like this- Mckay's message was so funny! "Anyway...returning to "Leadership". Ahem."
He looked like such an idiot when he started it, that was great.
How cute was Carson's message? He didn't want to make his mum cry, how sweet!
I'm glad that Ford had something to do (even though it wasn't much). I like the guy, it's not fault he hasn't been given much to work with.
I also really liked the end where they were all saying goodbye. And I loved Zelenka's (sp?) message when he was describing the city rising from the water, that was so cool!
Someone said above that this ep made them cry...I was nearly crying too when Weir had to tell all the families about their dead relatives. That must have been so hard for her.
Great ep, roll on next week!
Finally the Wraith actually seemed like formidable foes. Up until this point the wraith have seemed like the crappest enemy evr. But after witnessing the hive ships and the culling the Wraith now seem formidable. Atlantis is going to crash and burn (and sink). Well except for the fact that everyone will be saved at the last moment.
I really enjoyed this episode and getting to see them send messages to there families was great. McKay was just great as usual and you knew that in the end he would come out of his shell and say something for his sister which was really heartfelt. Ford and Carson were brillient and Zelenka was great.
Teyla didn't ennoy me i got the feeling that this had sometign to do with her father as she anted to save her fathers friend but i guess we'll find that out in The Gift. This ep helped to build up tension and how scared they were as you don't get that from sg-1 often.
i wish people would lay off Ford though and they whole thing of Sheppard/O'Neill as O'Neill is not as cocky as Sheppard
And the comparissons of Teyla and Teal'c as Teal'c would have agreed with Ford about taking the ZED PM from that planet of children.
I really liked this ep and am looking forward to the final. Atlantis has been great and i am so addicted thought this was a great first series and the show has great potential
I liked this episode. Lots of action - good in my opinion. McKay was excellent. Loved the way he wantedto make himself look better than he was. Some of the messages were pretty touching. Only bit i didnt like was the message from the scientist with the greasy hair and ponytail. As if O'Neill would listen to a message like that. Overall a great episode.
[SIZE=7][COLOR=blue][FONT=Arial]Lettes from pegasuswas very funnythat why i watched it 3times in one week.
This was one heck of an episode! It even stirred my heart at times...between the screams from the villagers and the "letters" back to families, it was fantastic. It just goes to show that one doesn't need action to have a good Stargate episode!
I am continually hungry for more episodes from this show...I wish that SG-1 continues and mentions something about Sam having gotten that transmission from Pegasus.
Man this has to be simply one of the most heartfelt episodes in Atlantis ever!
I don't think that the viewers could have gotten any closer to the characters in this episode. It was truly a emotional rollercoaster,
A 9/10!
I thought this episode was really good .I thought McKay's lab assistent's message was really funny - sounds like she likes McKay. I really wish I could have seen Sam's face when she heard McKay's message to her (if Ford didn't edit it out). The messages from Weir about deceased team members were really sad!
There was a lot of thinking back but I think it was balanced out nicely with new footage. All in all, I think this episode was a nice mixture of sadness and humor.
That's all!
Space butterfly
I Agree this was a overall Good Episode i Actually kinda felt some pity for all those people being culled which i think the writers do a good job at creating.
It had its funny moments too Like the Zelenka (Security Clearance) part.
Looking foward for years more of Eps!
I have a new love and his name is Dr. Rodney McKay. He's arrogant yet self-effacing, brilliant yet off his noodle, cowardly yet utterly courageous. His scenes are absolutely mesmerizing and I think he's one of the best characters on television.
He has so grown on me as I used to think he was a bit of a lummox. (Isn't it amazing how someone can become good-looking just by virtue of their unique and complex personality?) Sigh.
Anyway, (now that's out of my system) this was a very good character development episode. I liked Sheppard a little less and Teyla a little more. I'd rather see her being pig-headed and obstinate (for a good cause) than all sweet and shiny.
Weir was...hmmm, I'm going to be a bit nit-picky here. I liked the attempt at character development and I do like her more than I did. But. I got tired of the vibrato voice and trembling lip while she was recording almost ALL of her messages. You know what? I think a stoic manner and one utterly heartfelt voice break and a "stop tape" would have conveyed her courage and her suffering in a more effective way. But that's just me.
I thought the Asian scientist was adorable and hope to see more of her.
This was a very good episode combining pathos from the sad messages and the screams of the doomed villagers, with tension generated from the team's knowledge that the messages would probably be their last (as well as the knowledge that the Wraith were on their way).
I thought it was an overall good episode, for a clip show. This seasons clip shows for SG-1 and Atlantis were the best yet, even though it's Atlantis' first.
I thought it was an Ok episode. No one really did anything. Everyone was sitting around almost the entire episode. Either sitting in front of the camera talking or sitting in the puddle jumper and talking.... *yawn*
It wasn't a bad episode, and it did further the plot/tension for the next episode... but it was kind of slooooooow
they could have done without it to senimrntal no explosions
6/10
I figured this would be a clip show, but they did a decent job of it. I can't decide whether or not I like the tension they're writing into the story between Sheppard and Teyla. I'll reserve judgement until I see where they are going with this. Maybe we'll see more of that sub plot next episode. It sounds like the episode will be a heavy Teyla character episode. On a side note, it looks like they're going to repopulate Atlantis with Pegasus refugees. I thought Weir was against that, but there didn't seem to be any comment made on that when they returned. Seems like a lost opportunity.
Ok ep. I though . But what was going on between Shep and Teyla . I'm sure they will straighten this out in sparring . And why did Teyla who I love to death uncloak the puddle jumper ? . I loved when JOhn ended up staying he can't refuse Teyla
9 / 10
This really showed what the people of Atlantis really were, and what they had left behind. Kinda got emotional ( I'm a baby ), but I lived. It was way funny too, they way McKay was doin his own thing. He is so weird, but still funny at the same time. You rock McKay! LOL!
There was a VERY SERIOUS connection with Shepard and Teyla. They both have some anger issues they need to resolve. I think it was preparing Teyla for her next ep., which I am very excited for.
! I wanna know more from Teyla, she's kinda mysterious. Can't wait for next week.
Yeah I agree ,she does come off that way . Which I can't wait for The Gift .
3 days until "The Gift "
Scifi Channel
Time : 9:30
this episode showed a lot of promise but there were some annoying things to it.
Teyla just annoyed the hell out of me, why couldn't they just shoot her head off and be done with it.
Sorry...shouldn't really say that.
But it's sorta like Teyla is acting like a person from Earth, like she is one of the people who should make one of the omportant decisions when it should actually be Weir doing those decisions
ooooh i love this ep
the japanese woman is great
she's lovely and gorgeous ... i was lying on the floor trying to hold my stomach (i dont like the pain in my stomach after a laugh session
)
and shep and teyla have a little dispute *hihihi
* yeahyeahyeah
I especially liked the letter part. McKay was just unbelievable and his comments about Carter
But from wich country is the guy who spoke in his language about the way Atlantis rose from the water?
You mean Zelenka? He's Czeck... and he spoke Czeck, then (besides he looked very erm good when he demonstrated the rising thing)
[...]
Oh yeah i also loved the McKay part... when he said something like ok, back to...erm... leadership
very, very nice
Considering you could class this episode as a "Flashback" episode, I thought it was 1 of the most well written episodes of the season with plenty of things going on to entertain the audience instead of just all the team speaking in the camera saying "we did this, and that, oo and this too"
Fantastic episode
I think everyones agreed that the way the ep was written and it being a flashback was the best flashback in the stargate franchise.
Very beautiful...and the graphics were pretty cool.
Hi
I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but this episode looked like there was going to be a second part to it. Um....is there? Where is it?
oh ok...what about the possible Wraith attack on Atlantis? It didn't happen did it?
A lot of people seemed to find Teyla and Dr. Weir annoying in this episode...I just don't see that. I agree that Weir might have gone a little overboard on the tapes, so it got old after a while, but I didn't think it detracted from the episode too much.
Anyway, all the tapes were really great! I don't know which one I like more, but my favorite two are McKay's and Zelenka's, although Dr. Becket's wasn't bad.
Someone mentioned earlier that they don't seem to do a lot with Ford. I never really noticed it before, but that's true. I really hope they get more into him next season. Can't wait!
~Haven~
i think that next time Atlantis faces the wraith...the wraith feed on cavanuagh...hehe, that would be good...and he'd be like...i'm too good for you to feed off of...but i think he would be a big wuss.
Ah, they jsut showed this episode on telly here. In recent season 2 Red-Shirt discussion, it came to my mind what a nice Red-Shirt homage they're doing during Weir's speech. Now I hate her speeches, but it wasn't that bad.
*random comment of the day*
Not good enough, i dont understand why Weir just doesnt send him home.
