Season 3, Episode 18 - Shades of Grey
Original Air Date: February 11, 2000

SG-1 travels to Tollana to negotiate a trade. O'Neill becomes annoyed when the Tollans refuse to cooperate due to their fear that any weaponry given to Earth would likely be used on itself than against the Goa'uld. In an act that shocks the rest of his team, O'Neill steals a Tollan device as they are departing back to Earth.

I found this episode to be predictable. It was clear at the beginning that Jack was faking his attitude, etc. and that he was trying to uncover bad stuff going on by acting the bad guy. I got a great laugh at the end, though, when Daniel Jackson told Jack that he lost at pulling straws. Teal'c always has great expression and body language that doesn't require him to speak much. He's great.

Come on, guys! It was obvious he was acting right before he was forced to retire. His behavior and statements he was making were totally out-of-line with all of his prior behavior/beliefs, etc. And then it was brutally obvious when he was so rude to Daniel Jackson at his house. That definitely wasn't the real Jack speaking#-he was acting.

I found this episode to be predictable.

Really? Honestly? And you could tell what the ending might bring? I think many of us realised something was up, but weren't sure what.

Yeah I think most people had an idea what was going to happen, but since this is Stargate it could have easily surprised us with a totally different ending.

What can you expect, his genetic material is degrading. I'm surprised that is the only problem we see.

This was my favorite episode of all time until I saw Abyss (probably because Daniel was in it) and yes, I reolised for the outset that Jack was up to something but had no idea exactly what until the Asgard beamed down.

I like it when characters start acting out of character because it tests your perceptions of that person.

However saying all that - Jack IS capable of going a bit loopy - look what he's been through? The Jack O'Neill portrayed by Kurt Russell in the film was a hardassed suicidal maniac, he mellowed over the years but he still carries the dark side stuff that made him an effective Special Ops Colonel.

And as mentioned above, this is STARGATE - anything can happen (and probably will!)

In my humble opinion, I don't think that this episode started to get predictable until Jack accepted Maybourne's offer to join his team. And even then it wasn't really predictable as much as we bagan to realize that there's something going on.

I was bothered though by the way Jack treated Teal'c. I know that it was mentioned at the end that the Asgards requested only Jack is to be let in on the plan, however I doubt that anyone believes that Teal'c rebeled against Apophis to help humans steal technologies from other civilizations.

I don't know about you guys, but I share Jack's hatred of the Tollans. They have always been arrogant even when SG-1 saved their tollan behinds off their original planet in series 1. And not to mention when they saved their whole civilization from being slaughtered and enslaved by the Goa'ulds, yet they still have the nerve to threaten to severe ties with Earth just because some group stole some equipment from them. I hate them.

this wuz the 1st ep i ever watched, and i've never stopped liking it. i tell my family when we see it on TV that this is why they watch 7 or 8 eps a wk. they didn't answer, but i don't think it thrilled them. i liked the whole jack turning from sg1 thing, cuz i think its something he might actually do under certain circumstances. not that he'd ever NOT help his team, but i could see his "darker side" popping up more than it does in the series. and i liked daniel's line at the end: "we drew straws. i lost." lol

i thought she wuz kinda like sam- smart and efficient, following orders but using her brain too. i think the only reason she seemed so un-sam like is b/c there wuz no chemistry between her and oneill, so it seemed a little weird.

I didn't think she was anything like Sam either. Especially when she was carrying around the gun...she didn't make a believable soldier the way Amanda Tapping does.

And I thought Jack was an ass to all of SG-1, but he only apologized to Daniel. I was like "Okay, now Carter since you were a total dick to her!" What was up with the line "I haven't been acting myself since I met you!"
