Season 2, Episode 16 - A Matter of Time
Original Air Date: January 29, 1999

While attempting to save the members of SG-10 from a black hole on planet P3X-451, the SG-1 team activates the Stargate and exposes themselves to the hole's gravitational pull. Trying to break free, the team shuts down the gate's power and in the ensuing explosions Teal'c is badly injured.

This is cool, I wonder what would really happen being that close to a black whole, I feel sorry for the men traped on the planet, although for them it wont seem long, but they will be stuck there forever, with time getting slower and slower. poor them.

Who's the resident scientific expert around here?? Shoot me down if I'm wrong, but do SG10 know that time is slowing? Surely they have no concept of it. I mean, they are just running to dial the gate, it's only when viewed from outside (ie SGC) that it appears a long time. Therefore this hole will kill them in a matter of seconds (for them at least) and they won't be suffering for eternity?!??!?

Well, someone here said they felt sorry for SG10 as they had to suffer the ending (the black hole would kill them) but it would take forever to happen. My theory was it would only take forever TO US (from where we observe it). To them only a few seconds will have passed.

I know. Hence I asked if you guys had a resident scientific expert here to shed some light on the matter. My knowledge is extremely limited on physics and black holes and the like.

With Einstein's whole theory of relativity and such, time for the guys on the doomed planet is proceeding as normal, so when the wormhole opens up it immediately closes for them. From Earth's perspective, it's going to take forever for the men to die, but for the men it will be quick and painless. So except for the team's leader, who is evidently a science-y kind of guy, they have no idea what's going to happen. online2long.gif

The wormhole originated from Earth, not from the planet with the black hole. So there was no longer a wormhole connected from any planet to the planet near the black hole.

But I also think that the address for this gate, or another one near a black hole, was an address that we passed along to the Aschen in a later episode - 2001 from season 5. So maybe they'll dial out and get sucked into a situation where their time just runs out too ....

Pity you couldn't use the DHD to remotely connect two other gates (use DHD #1 to create a wormhole between gates #2 and #3). Think of the mischief you could get up to whistling.gif

Who'd be first to send to the black hole??

Ah but if you suck them up in a black hole what happens to them? Don't they become someone else's plague then?

I read that one of the plot ideas for season 6 was to have the Aschen come to attack Earth in ships because they dialed the blackhole first on their home planet and it was destroyed. But they cancelled that idea. Just like how they cancelled the idea that Lantash would be on the SG team in Stargate Atlantis.
