Season 5, Episode 17 - Fail Safe
Original Air Date: April 5, 2002

Earth finds itself threatened by something even larger than the Gou'ald, when the team learns that an asteroid is on a collision course with the planet. With no luck getting help from the Tok'ra or Asgard, the team must put together a plan to solve the problem on their own. (Note: This episode aired before Summit in the UK.)

This was my second favorite episode. I loved it. I like Jack's comments. I also like the little problem with the all yellow wires. Oh and the end where the Tok'ra come and ask if they need assistance and Jack says they have it all under control, love the looks his teammates give him. Great!

Is it just me or isn't there a serious question about what happens to the asteroid after they hyderdrive it through the earth? After all you've got a high quantity of the a mineral the earth deseperately wants in the asteroid. Then another question why didn't the Asgard at least check the asteroid out? If they had've they could've intervened cause it was a deliberate Goa'uld attack on a Protected Planet.

Can some one enlighten me on something? I only watch the series off and on, what do they mean when they say "Alpha Point?" Is this some off-world SGC command center I don't know about? A friendly world? What?

Totally lost,

If they had've they could've intervened cause it was a deliberate Goa'uld attack on a Protected Planet.

I think because nobody expected that the Goa'uld would try and sidestep the protected planets treaty in this manner. Asteroids are pretty common things in any galaxy, and the fact that one happens to be headed for your planet is an unhappy coincidence. I'm sure that once SG1 got back to earth they communicated the true nature of the asteroid to the Asgard, but without the "smoking gun", who would they actually blame it on?

And as to what happened afterwards, the SGC didn't actually have any spaceships capable of travelling to the asteroid and starting mining operations. Also, the trajectory that it was on would likely take it out of the solar system, which means longer and longer trips with the minerals. Much easier to stargate to a planet like Edora from A Hundred Days which is rich in naquadah, and you don't need a space suit to mine it!

it was too tidy to be a real astroid, it was too neatly shaped, i emediatly suspected the goaul'd, it was too obvious. and the coinsidence that the tok'ra are only capable of comeing to the rescue after the threat is neutrolised! biggrin.gif w00t.gif

Yes, it also seemed a little on the big side for something that just happened to be floating by.

And as for the Tok'ra, while there are definitely times where they've been a little slow helping us out, to say the least, there are also times when their assistance has been timely. More so Jacob Carter than any other Tok'ra, but you can't always write them off as being unable to assist.

They can't be all dead as they seem to work in cell groups - much like any guerilla organisation. They're bound to have had more than one base of operations otherwise they would have been wiped out centuries ago.

This is backed by by the season 6 episode Allegiance where Jacob brings the survivors of an attack on another Tok'ra base to the alpha site.

And there's another point to back this up, although it's officially a spoiler. In The Changling we learn that the Tok'ra have been working on refining Tretonin, first seen earlier in season 6 in Cure, so that they can use it specifically to help a Jaffa live without a symbiote. To do this they MUST have had access to a base of some description - certainly something with research facilities. So it backs up the point that they can't have been wiped out.

"Carter...I can see my HOUSE!"

One of the all time best moments I have ever seen on any tv show...the look on his face when he said that line was absolutely priceless....

Also liked, but not quite as much "I just wanna say right now that I think this is a very poorly designed bomb, and I think we should say something to someone when we get back."

Watching it again today on channel 4 in the UK, I realised what a "Macgyver" moment there was where he had to "flukily" cut 4 of the 5 yellow wires...

Loved the, "Carter! I can see my house!" moment too... biggrin.gif laugh.gif

What is wrong with the writers on this one?!!! dry.gif

What was all that crap with the wires about? Gosh, we must live in one hell of a lucky alternate reality, don't we? If you attempt to count the times that we were saved by pure chance you'll realize they're numerous! This addition was so uncalled for.

I have another major concern though and I hope that someone can asnwer me. Were all humans on earth sleeping? Didn't anybody even notice that a huge gigantic big massive great ass astroid came so close to earth and then disappeared and reappeared on the other side? What kind of cover can anyone come up for that? mad.gif
