I loved the ending! I thought it was very good at showing the depths of what some people would go to so that the elite people could live their lives in the sunshine while others toil in the darkness. What was most entertaining was Jack talking about a bald man and we originally thought of Hammond but it was Homer, I love Jack!!

..Can't help but let my mind wallow in the gutter when I watch this episode. Michael Shanks and that little fuzzyness of the unshaven look he had goin' on. Yes. Indeed. Niice episode. **drool/dreamy sigh**

But really, even though "Beneath the Surface" was said and done, I think the writers presetened it in a good ol' stargate fashion. I mean..c'mon. It was certainly more exciting than the one that Voyager did (which I have seen..am a ST:V buff..), but what I wonder is how they recovered their memories so quickly once Brenna told them that their suspicions were right and that their memories HAVE been tampered with. Granted, their brain anatomy might have been different than the inhabitants of the planet (did it even have a name? I can't seem to remember even though I just SAW the ep...). Just. Very quickly. Seems kinda unplausible (if that's a word) that they got it back in almost an instant with a few hesitations.

Anybody else think that this one could have been a two parter?

Plus I wanted to see more of the actual city but of course the allotted time for an ep. is 40-46 minutes sooo. Phooey. mad.gif The dome over their city looked pretty cool.

From what I've read of what the writers would have liked to do with this episode, it wasn't actually make it into a two-parter. But they did feel that an emotional base was missing from this episode. My reading is that what they would really have liked to have done was make more of the SC & O'Neill relationship, but felt that this had already been done in Divide and Conquer and hence didn't want to push it too far. So they ended up with an episode that, while one of the better written ones, still was missing something. That said I did enjoy the episode. smile.gif

Now as for recovering their memory, they knew that things weren't right, but once given the support that they were correct in this assessment and given their real names and positions back, things came back more quickly. Remember that O'Neill had already been dreaming about his earlier conversations in the dome, so he was already remembering some things. Certainly I know that when you're trying to remember something and simply can't, all you need is that spark and then all of a sudden the whole memory comes back in it's entirety.

I believe that the Voyager episode that you may have been thinking about was the two-part episode: Workforce. These two episodes were aired during Voyager's seventh season on February 21,2001, and February 28,2001. This also means that the Stargate's episode "Beneath the Surface" was aired nearly half a year before Star Trek's was. In this case, Stargate had the original storyline.

The end of this ep made me feel really sad for Jack and sam, when she called him sir and said something like, "its the way it has to be". They both looked so gutted, especially after getting so close earlier on in the ep. Damn the military!

Oh, they can always hook up later and no one gots to know about it. whistling.gif

This ep. wasn't one of my favs but it still satisfies my Stargate hunger. I just don't understand why they didn't tell the 'slaves' that there was a city above them. You don't have to treat them like slaves. Stupid alien planet. dry.gif

When I first saw this ep it was of course straight after all the other shippy episodes so by this time I think all us shippers were in shippy heaven tongue.gif
I loved the little nuances about this episode, and the way they are so comfortable even in such a horrible environment. Just a shame this was the most shippy time. It would have been great if it had carried on a bit more strongly than it has. But then again I guess all the non-shippers would get even more mad and we'd have alot of unhappy campers on our hands!

This episode is yet another classic example of how SG1's nosiness and intrusion of how other societies govern themselves has destroyed another potentially good alliance. Who is to say that forced labor is wrong, because if you say it is then you are just acting accordingly to earth's own code of conduct, and ignoring the element of exploration and diversity. I wish that the producers were to only to see this fact, because it fusturates me when O'neill is constantly intruding on other races and then no one can figure out why the Stargate program isn't bringing back anything useful.

People who ask "who can say if it's wrong", should undergo whatever the controversey is about, at least in their imagination. If you have actually been a slave you are not likely to think slavery is a matter of 'diversity'. If a loved one has been killed by someone trying to finance a fix, you are not likely to think drug use is a matter of 'personal choise'.

Ship is stuff going on in the relationships between different characters. In this episode the ship is between Sam and Jack eg. the 'my dreams are about... other things' <looking at Sam>
Anyone who takes a particular interest in these realtionships is generally branded a shipper in the fandom.

Sorry this isn't a particularly good explanation so it probably won't help very much. Maybe someone else can explain it better!

While the shippy aspect of this ep is often mentioned it didn't really advance what we already knew about how Jack and Sam feel about each other. Nice to see it played out but nothing new there.

The best scene was the one between General Hammond and Dr. Fraiser. When he tells her that a covert search and rescue mission is being planned/considered and she steps up and volunteers to go. No hesitation. It really highlighted how her relationship with sg1 extends beyond just being their doctor. Finally we see some real depth to her character.

I was therefore disappointed with the ending. After the Administrator and his two guards came into Brenna's office, I kept expecting Janet to come through the door with another sg team and save her friends. It would have been cool.

I think this episode is very bas translated in France. First the final scene, it is:
Us scene:
O'Neill: He is from Texas, you know?
CArter: Yes Sir
O'Neill: Yes, Sir ... (a lot of sens inside this term)

French scene
O'Neill: He is from Texas, you know?
Carter: Yes, Jack
O'Neill: Colonel, Major !
It is so bad !!!

And I would like to know what does he say in his dream! I have downloaded this episode with Kazaa but it is the only episode has got with big problem to read!! And I do not trust French translation. Thank you.

really it is different? how does that happen? the dubbing on it or summit? cos i couldn't see jack saying that like that to sam- it wouldn't seem right. by the way french carter, you say that paris or new york as your location, do you live in both places- very cool!

........some people are just born lucky!...............as for me?.....na! w00t.gif
