Season 4, Episode 20 - Entity
Original Air Date: February 9, 2001 The SGC makes contact with a world whose address was taken from the Ancients' repository of knowledge, and sends through a MALP probe. An alien virus infiltrates the SGC computer and gathers classified data. When the virus is presumed killed, it is learned that it has actually sought refuge in Carter's body. |

Ermmm by the way I can't remember what was the entity. Who or what was it!
If it was on the ancients computer thing then I was thinking it was clever. But I can't remember Steve And poor jack having to shoot carter 3 times |

it was an invisible being from that world where they sent the probe and it got into the sgc's computer systems. and didnt oniell shoot carter twice cause im pretty sure he wouldnt have the guts or the heart to shoot her three times cause i imagine alot of ppl wouldnt be happy with him if he shot carter three times. |

Don't know so much that it was an "invisible being" as a virus that came back though the probe telemetry.
The deal was that the radio signals that the probe was sending back to earth were causing enormous amounts of damage on the planet, and the "entity" came through on a virtual suicide mission to try and stop any more radio signals from happening. But there were some big holes in the plot. Firstly, why did the entity go into SC? It claimed to have seen in computer files that O'Neill was unlikely to kill this person. But it's highly unlikely that any relationship between SC and O'Neill would actually be documented. And even if we accept that their relationship, such as it is, is documented, why go into something that O'Neill wouldn't kill? It's not like O'Neill is in charge of the base. Why didn't the entity go into someone like Hammond? While it didn't kill the episode, it certainly made things a little contrived! |

Well an ascended one is invisible unless they choose to become visible, does that make them able to work their way into the computer? And Nirrti and the Ashrak in Allegience was invisible, but I don't think that either of them could work their way into a computer, let alone displace SC's conscious being. Sorry, just playing semantics. But when you say "invisible being", that can mean several things that aren't necessarily electronic in their nature. |

Uhm, sorry to seem like I'm on a witch hunt here but I usually find something to comment on in your posts As I remember and understood, the entity went into Sam as she had the greatest MIND and was valued by ALL. When it said to Jack "you value the life of this one" - I took that to mean "you ALL value the life of this one" meaning the SGC in general. It just happened to be talking to Jack at the time. And to throw the shippers a bone, if the entity was smart enough to learn as much and as fast as it did, perhaps it subconsciously picked up the sexual tension down the corridors of SGC as it monitored Jack. |

Well we do seem to provoke intellectual conversations between ourselves ... I'm going to have to watch it again. I didn't pick up on the greatest mind. I picked up on the "you value", not the "you all value". I'll need to remember more precicely what happens. It was a little bit contrived though. It was almost like an episode where they wanted to play out that everything, feelings wise, had been pushed back to before Divide and Conquer. The "Jack will kill Sam if others are in danger" thing. You could almost see this coming from when Hammond starts talking about "difficult decisions" and O'Neill is seen carrying around a Zat. You just knew that SC was going to be shot - and shot twice. But it did pose many good questions on whether it is better to talk or better to shoot - although it's phrased by DJ as protect, which is really what it is. It's something that went missing somewhat in season 6 when DJ was not there to be the non-military mind on some things. |

This episode gives a thoughtful insight into the posiblity of real A.I. and the relationship of the computer to a human brain. The question, is there a relationship and if not can one be made. It is a interesting and intriguing concept. Einstien may be right?

I've read that AT said this was one of the most difficult episodes she has been in as it was so NOT the character she usually plays. Apparently she also had a great deal of difficulty buying into the story line, which isn't usually a problem for her. And despite the fact that she spent most of the episode either lying in bed or just staring at people, she was absolutely exhausted because the part involved so much stillness and anger. So it does seem as though it was a lot of hard work - and very well acted on AT's part, which appears to be pretty much the norm for her.

And I managed to get in the post before you? A lowly butter bars Lieutenant before an exalted Lieutenant Colonel? I really am having a good day aren't I? True. AT is an excellent actor and does not get enough recognition for it. She certainly is, IMHO anyway, the best actual actor on the cast. Not that the rest aren't good, it's just that she never actually stops acting. Even when someone else is in shot, AT is always doing something in the background, not just sitting there. |

Ok so after watching the episode again I have some questions... where these Invisible beings... or some type of Computer AI colony... where they only exist as data streams? (woudl explain why it was easily adaptable to our electronics...
and if it was just an electronic being... why havent we gone back? and not taken any electronics and conduct some archological stuff like they used to back in the day before electronics? SrA Pennington |

Very exciting and emotional episode. Sam was amazing and very convincing. The part where Jack begins to threaten with sending an army of probes back to the planet is amazing. Also the part where the phrase "I am here" keeps popping on all computer screens is just wonderful.
I was wondering though, Sam mentioned that the entity has a very powerful compression capability and that it's capable of regenerating itself from smaller fragments of itself. Why didn't the entity transfer part of it back to the computer and regenerate there? Also, how can that computer contain the mind of SC? I would suspect that only an astronomicaly huge space of storage can contain a human mind. I liked the ending a lot when SC said that she was shouting for them to hear here. This is one wonderful episode |

I have watched this one so many times it's great. Anderson really gives you the feeling that O'neill is angery with Carter for not listening to him and also I think that thiers guilt thier, he's said before he would rather die than watch Carter. When you hear her exhale when she is transformed back into her body theirs obviously a sense of relief, but I also picked up on the fact that O'niell really wanted to hold her hand. This episode was really showing O'niells caring side though more caring than he should be! Tapping was absolutly amazing. Though you are not ment to have relations ships it shows they are still human and obviously will have feelings that they cannot help..
Bless, I think they should just retire and be together cause they look fantastic or have a secret relationship/fling, i know your not ment to but they already have feelings for each other! |
