i had been waiting for this one for a long time. this half is really picking up, cant wait until its on its on dvd:)

im glad they didnt bring in Baal, it would have made it very cliche, (the bad guy coming in to find out whats gone wrong)
now we know that naquadria can be made in the lab, so it wont be as hard to get as it currrently is. (they just need to fix the instabiltity)
and this episode showed that the goauld arent all that evil, some might be able to change, i think the goauld might have gone to the tokra if it had survifed, if that happened, the writers would make her like tannith again, that would be just bad

+Kianna was played well, and i didnt think she was goauld at the start, but i didnt know why she injected her with drugs, then i got it
+nice twist with the goauld, i hadnt seen that coming, i avoided the spoilers for some reason !

I personally think that this episode was the best one overall. i hope it continues. too bad i saw it on a bad monitor. ill be definately getting the dvd when i can. i never understood why many people hated jonas. ive always liked him.

Apologies for any mistakes in my post as I'm going totally off memory and I've only seen it once just now so forgive me if I get some of the technicalities wrong.

Episode Summary (for those who might not see this for a long time):

Jonas returns through the Stargate with news that Kelowna (and subsequently his whole planet) is in grave danger. They have learned that the Naquadria they thought was native to their planet in fact isn't and what has actually been happening is that a reaction has been occurring within their planet that has been converting Naquadah deposits into Naquadria. It has been discovered that this conversion is becoming very dangerous and very soon the conversion of a large desposit of Naquadah will cause a massive explosion which will destroy half of Kelowna and cause a fall-out that will render their planet (which is now called Langara as the three nations have somewhat united) uninhabitable.

Thanos, the Goa'uld that once occupied Kelowna was apparently experimenting with Naquadah trying to create Naquadria in a lab when some kind of accident must have happened which triggered a chain reaction that started the initial conversion inside the planet. It was discovered that this settled down shortly afterwards, but the testing of a Naquadria bomb performed by the Kelownans started it off again and so ultimately their use of the Naquadria for weapons put their whole planet in grave danger.

Sam and Jonas work with another Kelownan scientist named Kianna to try to solve the problem, while Daniel, Jack and Teal'c (who later joins Sam and Jonas) stay back on Earth to talk with the representatives of the three nations regarding possible relocation

They decide to fix the problem by drilling into the planet with a huge drilling excavation vehicle that took over 2 years to build. With the help of Tok'ra crystals, they plan to strategically place a nuclear device near a fault-line which when detonated would stop the reaction.

While examining the schematics for the drill, Carter discovers that some of the designs are very similar to Goa'uld designs and shortly afterwards they discover that Kianna, Jonas' girlfriend and the scientist that has been working with them is a Goa'uld. She has been using a drug to mask the presence of the symbiote and works for Ba'al who is very interested in the Naquadria.

Needless to say, there are complications when the drill breaks down half way down and they end up having to use the Tok'ra crystals to create a tunnel big enough for one person to go down on a suicide mission to place the bomb. Kianna (symbiote) volunteers and ends up sacrificing her life to save them in an uncharacteristically compassionate act for a Goa'uld.

When she gets to the bottom, they discover that the power generators are damaged and that they are losing power... soon they will not have sufficient power to get back to the surface. Kianna (symbiote) looks pretty bad and decides that she is not going to make it and tells them to leave her behind. They refuse to and she makes it back to the excavation vehicle just in time.

The planet is saved and it is a relatively happy ending, except for the fact that the symbiote dies. This would normally be a good thing, but this Goa'uld appeared to actually have a heart and be more like a Tok'ra than a Goa'uld. The host survives and makes a point of telling everyone that the Goa'uld chose not to kill her by releasing the poison as it died. Instead, it tried to heal her and was probably responsible for her quick recovery.

My comments

Overall, I thought this was an excellent episode and is probably my favourite of the season so far. I thought it had a very intriguing plot that was very well intermixed with action, emotion, suspense and plot twists - it had all the things that make a great Stargate episode in my opinion.

I really enjoyed learning more about Naquadah and Naquadria and the science behind them and finally learning the name of the Goa'uld that once occupied Langara (Thanos).

We actually get to see a Goa'uld that shows feelings for a human and it seems obvious that she is in love with Jonas and was visibly hurt when she found out that she disgusted him. It shows that even the Goa'uld are not beyond compassion and her willingness to sacrifice herself to save the planet was yet another unexpected twist. As a side note, wasn't this the same actress that played Ba'al's lotar in 'Abyss'? I'm sure they look pretty similar and I will have to check. If this is the case then what is confusing is that in this episode she also serves Ba'al, but her host is Kelownan and so it obviously isn't the same lotar

All of the team seem to be in it for a reasonable length of time (unlike some other season 7 episodes), but Sam, Jonas and Kianna got most of the screen time. Jack was present and in a few scenes which was at least good to see, although Daniel did still seem to get more focus than him.

I also though it was really funny how they decided to take back their offer of relocating the Langarans to Madrona after all their bitching, saying how it would be a punishment to the Madronans

So Kianna was host to a Goa'uld, so would she then have a lot of knowledge that the SGC would want to get their hands on? Also, from this episode it is apparent that Naquadria can be created from Naquadah, so maybe the SGC will work out a way to convert the Naquadah in a similar way... they don't have to worry about what happened to Langara happening to them really as there are no Naquadah deposits on Earth.

Jonas' hair takes a little getting used to, but by the end of the episode I was actually quite accepting of it. I do think it would have been funny to have Sam or Jack make a side-comment about it though.

One thing though... I don't really understand why detonating a nuclear device right next to a massive Naquadria deposit was a very good idea... isn't that a little dangerous? I'm willing to ignore this though in light of an excellent episode (there's probably some scientific explanation anyway).

Overall, I'd give this episode 9/10.

OK episode. Written by Corin Nemec??? Must be his first (and last). Good goa'uld kind of made the episode crap! Good humour in that when Jack was arguing with the representatives!

Brilliant! I thought it was definitely a Jonas centered episode but was reasonably good. A bit ironic that 1) Goa'uld had a vaccine so Carter wouldn't detect her (How did she know Carter would come) and 2) They had a massive drill when they needed it most!

A little too ironic if you ask me but hey....thats Stargate for ya!

I'd give the episode 7/10 but next weeks looks immense!

Well, I've had the VCR running, but haven't had the chance yet to go watch. I've said in another thread that I really wasn't expecting much from this one and anticipating being bored as Jonas isn't a favourite character of mine (this may only be because I've so far missed some essential character forming epsiodes focusing on him and may change my mind once I've seen them) - but you guys have got me looking forward to it and keen to watch it now!

Well, I'll admit it. I surprised myself and enjoyed this one. Well...most of it. Must admit my heart sank when the digger appeared and I pretty much fast forwarded through most of the 'scenes from The Core', which bored me almost as much as the original movie of the same name did. Although it was nice to see Sam and Teal'c - somewhat - working together on a problem. There's too little of that and I always enjoy seeing it.

Also, the good Gou'auld didn't seem right to me. It's just...wrong. Like an aberration of nature or something.

I thought the exposition scene with Teal'c bringing back the crystals was a little clumsily done. Which is unsual for the writers on this show.

I did enjoy the scenes with the Ambassadors though. It was nice, in the initial meeting scenes to see Teal'c actively getting involved. When Jack yelled, "Aww, for crying out loud" I jumped about fifty feet in the air along with Daniel. LOL. Loved Daniel trying repeatedly to stop him. Loved Teal'c giving Sam that "Oh, geez, get over it!" look when whatsishername called him Sholva. And loved Daniel's worried expression when Jack told him he could help him out. The whole we like the Madronians too much and that's what you get speech was funny too.

So, all in all - it didn't suck! <G>

Still couldn't work up much interest in Jonas though.

I thought this episode was really good! It was great to see Jonas again and for his planet to be under a threat like this. They have advanced a lot more than would have been expected. So did the other nations form a treaty so that they could share the new technology the Kelownans were getting from Jonas and of course his Goauld of a girlfriend?
If I was Jack I wouldn't just shout or threaten them- I'd be completely undiplomatic and hit each one from the back of the head!
(To conclude- they were sooooh similarly annoying. Sounded like a few leaders from our world that need a slap as well...)

I also liked the whole Kianna thing. It was quite surprising though. So she was a Goauld- but somehow it appeared as though she had feelings for our Jonas? Cripes! And yet it gave up its life to save Kianna. Sounds awful Tok'ra like. But I'm not one to fuss much or nitpick either- so I sat back and enjoyed the happy ending.

Loved the humour as well. Teal'c is quickly getting to the status of negotiator (right at the start), and total comic genius. I saw that, "Get over yourself!" look he gave when called a "sholva" too!
Jack was as usual hilarious in his own way and Daniel was extremely brave to put up with those nagging politicians- but then again we saw him vent his frustration out near the end when asked by Jack- who then took over very well!

This episode was a big NAY for me because i didn't like anything about it really. Theres loads of films and tv shows about having to drill down into the earth and plant a bomb even if it is to stop the Naquadria thing. I thought that the ambassadors were pretty lame with their petty arguments and i thought that the drill was pretty cool, but i thinks a story about a drill is boring.

I know they used Tok'ra crystals to try and spice it up a bit but that didn't work for me . Sure to see Jonas again was pretty cool and i liked the bit that Rax mentioned earlier

Worst ep of the season
rating 4/10

Were they referring to that Weather Planet MADRONA from Season 2 when they were calling it MADRONAS? 2 different names that are very similar? They should have just stuck them all on an uninhabited planet and gotten it over and done with!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that they were referring to Madrona which was from the episode 'Touchstone' (the one with the weather controlling device). I too thought I heard them say Madronas (will have to check later), but it's only a minor nitpick even if it's true. After they started talking abouto the Madronans it was pretty clear to me.

Yeah, forgot to mention that red-headed Councillor was in desperate wont of a good slapping. My fingers were itching to administer it all the way through.

We could do with Jack O'Neill at a few UN meetings.

What a great ep. I think SG1 is getting back to its original standards.

Another Goa'uld showing signs of being 'good'. Pretty much the best looking Goa'uld we've seen for a while.

I think Corin may have a new role in SG1 or Atlantis - story writer. One of the best eps in Season 7 so far.

Well, this ep for me was a big disappointment.

I was looking forward to this ep, as we would get to see how Jonas is getting on, and although i did enjoy finding out more about Naquadriah and Naquadah, the ep just seemed kinda boring to me. Nothing much happened and it lacked suspense when it needed it.

Yeah, i agree. The good Goa'uld just didnt seem right, it was kinda going against everything we have been told and led to believe about the Goa'uld, and although this isnt necessarily a bad thing, something about it just didnt seem right to me.

Lol, well if you ask me, all three of them could have done with a good slap. They were just so irritating with their petty arguments, even when their entire planet was facing total destruction they couldnt even try and get along and they practically threw Earths offer of a new planet back in our face.

On the plus side, i did like the humour in this ep.

well if you lower your expectations to the level of grace, this was quite a good episode.

the only good thing i want to mention is a quote, because it is more fun to say bad things(even if i like it):
Jack: See, we actually like the Madroninins, they're a nice people, and we've decided there's no way that we would subject them to the like of you...
can anyone remember another time that Jack was this effective at negotiating? all i can remember are times when he made it worse.

the bad:
Teal'c was un-Teal'c-like. Normally he is silent except when spoken to, or had something important to say. Agreeing with O?Neill didn't seem like him, and his part was more on the side, he could have been replaced by almost anyone, and usually this is not the case

The show is reminiscent of "deep impact" and "Armageddon", but beyond that, the drill did not appear to be capable of doing what they designed it for. it seemed to have a 'grinder' in the front, and several on the rotating cone, but those on the cone were so far back that they could not possibly be hitting all of the stuff missed by the front.

We find a nice Goa'uld, show her that humans are different by waiting for her, one falls in love with her, and is on the verge (i believe) of accepting her, and she dies?! that made me sad, although it was better than leaving her behind (it's a good thing Jack wasn't there).

I was hoping the langarans would be more spirited in their hatred, but it was ok.

I liked it. I liked it a lot. I liked the fact that it was a standalone with a bit of back story to make it just that little bit more interesting. It was nice to see some exposition as to how and why Naquadria had formed on this planet alone out of all of them. It was also a nice little moral twist that they sowed the seeds for their own destruction. This could easily have turned into a terribly preachy environmental tale but it managed to stay on just the right side of morality to keep it real.
I also liked the claustophobic feel of the scenes in the drill and in the conference room while fleshing out their relocation. This was exactly how it should be, and Daniel & co's struggles to negotiate an agreeable solution were as intensive as the mission Sam and Teal'c undertook. It was also nice to see Sam and Teal'c interacting a bit more this year.

Jack seemed to have a reasonable amount of presence that I didn't miss him. When they buggered off in the elevator I thought we'd seen the last of him (hey that's a new reason for Lack Of Jack...he gets jerked off by a bunch of squabbling diplomats...well not literally of course but... ) but he came back with the best undiplomatic and Classic Jack phrase ever

Yeah I know load of people mentioned the line before but it's too good not to post again. I like that he came through in the end and turned things around as if to prove that, sometimes, diplomacy can go swing.

The new Kelowna hair craze is very fine IMO. I wanted to laugh at Jonas because he looked ridiculous but in actual fact I kind of liked it. Wasn't too keen on the natty little track suit number he was kitted out in. Not the most flattering outfit I've seen on the back of a fella, particularly one who I know is as fine as he is underneath.

Speaking of clothes (and sticking to the shallows here) Was this "get your arms out" week? I swear Sam Teal'c and Kianna were having a Best Biceps competition in that drill thing.

Teal'c seemed a little more human than normal, but I think this has been a bit of a trend this year. I like that he's been allowed to grow in this direction as CJ has great comic timing.

Is it me of did Kianna seem a little jealous of Sam there for a moment? Certainly Sam and Jonas had an easy rapport that, had I been his girl, I'd have been seething over.

Speaking of Kianna, it seemed that they figured she was a Goa'uld rather too quickly and easily. It needed a little more exposition here. I also didn't really get what her angle was. Was she a good Goa'uld? Was she just trying to preserve the Naquadria? Was she actually in love with Jonas? I have no issues with ehr being a good goa'uld if she was, but I just didn't really get it.

There was one really beautifully staged shot in this ep that has stuck with me. When we first saw the drill we had a lovely camera pan over the machine and down. I get really excited over stupid things like this because it's attention to detail and the people who do this kind of work on the series are so rarely acknowledged for it.

The diplomats annoyed the hell out of me, as well they should. The fact that the only one I was remotely sympathetic to was the one from the nation that started this whole mess with a bomb test says it all really.

Finally, did anyone else think it just a tad bit too conveinent (not to mention reminiscent of In The Line Of Duty) when the symbiote died allowing Kianna to live? I really don't get that. Surely the body of the host would have been irreparable while the symbiote could be saved. Actually this would have made a far more interesting ending, instead of Jonas mooching off back home with a symbioteless Kianna who may or may not have the same feelings for him as the snake did. I feel oddly unfulfilled now because I want to know if those kids made it or not.

All in all I thought it was a pretty top episode. Well written, nicely shot and balancing the two plot arcs nicely so that we get a fairly all round feel of the team. I'm still waiting to see them really intercting as a whole team this year though. It's been fairly lacking so far.

this ep is better than a few so far this season bout not the best so far! but it was still enjoyable to watch(200 times better than last week).

What happened 2 jonas's hair? it was horrid! his hair in S6 was WAY better!

I wonder if he will get along with the host of that goa'uld if he has only known her since the goa'uld took her as a host?

i liked the way jack got quite annoyed! it was ammusing watching him losing it and daniel just saying jack!

I think there was a little jealousy as she was most certainly in love with Jonas. Whether or not she was truely good isn't very clear to me. It's clear that she was however very different from the typical Goa'uld and showed compassion. I think that it was the Naquadria that was driving her, her feelings for Jonas emerged later and then kept her going... by the end of it all, it even seemed to me like she maybe cared less about the Naquadria than Jonas.

It did seem a little strange and convenient, kind of like a plot device inserted as an after-thought, but I was willing to accept it. Normally if the symbiote is dying then it can't/won't heal the host until it has healed itself. If it was so badly injured I don't really see how it could have cured her either. Maybe it decided to help the host instead of curing itself first and this was meant to be seen as yet another good act?

First off I would like to thank the UK fans for recording and uploading these episodes for the whole world to see. Now this is free trade at it's finest.

I liked the episode, just when you think you have heard everything come out of the mouths of SG-1, they surprise you again. Maybe it's me but it looks like Teal'c is taking on more human, or should I say, Tau'ri reactions and traits. Perhaps being around them for so long tends to rub off on you. Nice to see the O'Neill sarcasim alive and well.

Oh, and Jonas looked like he was going to get his girlfriend. . . . .until we found out who really liked him. We still don't know for sure if Kianna really likes Jonas but as Jonas said, it's in the developmental stage.

I think it is unfortunate that we could not get to really know Kianna and see more of her and Jonas together. I have no problem with a Goa'uld going good. Keep in mind we tend to only see the System Lords or renegades and they are going to be the bad asses of the bunch. I think it is possible that there are Goa'ulds our there that are just moderately evil. If you think about it a queen would need to make symbiotes with ranging levels of the Goa'uld genetic memory. You can't have everyone fighting to be top dog. There has to be some that are content with serving.

Sam has often talked about the Tok'ra being a passionate race and I think the Goa'uld are the same. A race that can be so hate filled can also love deeply. Also we don't know how old the Goa'uld was. Maybe she was relativly young and had not used a sarc too much. Kianna was never in one, I assume, so the host would not be affected by the sarcs effects.

I think her intention was to claim Langara for herself and possibly try and over throw Baal. Somewhere along the way rather it was the influence of the host or Jonas she had a change of heart. Yeah it's a leap, but unfortunatly with only 44 minutes or so we are going to have some loose ends and have to makes some leaps of logic.

I really liked the episode and I think it felt like an old SG1 episode. Jack and Daniel doing their diplomat/screw them routine. We are also starting to see the results of Teal'c living among the Tau'ri for the last 7 years. Carter doing some technobable. I liked the Langarans arguing. Peace is never an easy road and they have a long way to go. I also like how they handled the environmental issue. Just enough irony, without shoving it down our throats a la Star Trek.

PS Aesir I also think it was the same actress that played Baals loctar in "Abyss". Anyone confirm this yet?

Majikthize I too want to know what happens with Kianna and Jonas. I guess over the next few months we will see some interesting fanfics popping up.

good episode...little odd...i really like jack and teal'c's little thang with the ambassadors
the good gou'ald might be a little on the "o yeah like thats every going to happen" side but still it wasn't that bad...its good to know that at least someone on the teams is finally going to be with someone who doens't die...im sure hes gonna have some good sex
can't wait till death knell i wanna see some action some fighting!!

I don't know why some people are saying that a good Goa'uld is a bad thing. I thought thats what made the ep even better...It didn't constantly fall into the stereotype of "All tokra = Doubleplusgood, all Goa'uld = Doubleplusbad" that I've seen in a lot of eps. It made the Goa'uld seem more like a race instead of just the evil bad guys over the horizon.
The Jonas suit thing...sucked. But Jonas was actually much better. He wasn't superjonas like he was during his stay with SG1, and it kinda makes me wish they didn't kick him off. Kinda. Dont quote me on that!
I think Teal'c becoming a bit more Earthlike is great. I was really annoyed when he was in his Frowny phase for up to season 3, then kinda annoyed with him just being silent, but he's developing a sense of humour and it looks like he's smiling more! Yay.
Re the sybiote healing the host....Remember Jolinar? She was seriously injured (I gather) yet healed Carter. Why can't this goa'uld do the same?
And about the policitians bickering....Um, I don't see how some of you couldn't expect that? If Earth faced the same thing (and the British did it), it'd go something like this:

FRANCE: Is this not more proof of British incompetence? They wantonly destroy the environment and now because of them the Earth is going to explode!
AMERICA: Oh come on! The British were simply defending themselves against YOUR imperialism. The great United States condemns you for even considering attacking Britain both militarily and on the issues of environment.
GERMANY: Like your one to be talking! We have tried to teach you American dogs that environmentalism is....
RUSSIA: Gentlemen, please! Let us not get ahead of ourselves here. First we must go through the Stargate. Naturally starting with Russians first. It would be unfortunate if one of your nations were to....cease to exist before your evacuation. Oh, and we will be activating our nuclear arsenal.
CHINA: Is that a threat? China will not stand for threats. Remember we have a huge army....
ISRAEL: No. We must go first because we are the chosen ones.
MIDDLE EAST: Hah! Allah will save *us* first instead of you J....
ISRAEL: We tire of your terroristic tendencies. It is time that you plague the world NO MORE!
*The world is nuked to ****, everyone dies.....and then Earth blows up*

Er...Anyway.

Overall a really good episode, and definitely the standout of the season so far. Not to mention 10^(infinity) times better than Grace.

What makes you say that? They haven't particularly been acting "uncivilised" exept with the whole naquadria bomb thing, but we detonated our own nuclear bomb....
And to think that there wouldn't be infighting on Earth even if the Earth was threatened is pretty naive IMO. Human nature would guarentee it.

Great Ep!!!

I particularly like the thought of Jonas being able to take home his own version of Sam, only hotter!!!

Kianna being blended with a Goa'uld, then having it die inside her while it saved her life. So she remembers everything, and will most likely have a few Sam/Jolinar flashbacks. With the naquadah in her blood, she'll be able to use Goa'uld stuff .

She's also smart like Sam and looks great! Jonas has done really well cos she already likes him! He only has to get passed the fact that he was kissing a Goa'uld, then everything will be hunkydorry and they'll have lots of fun together and perhaps the next time we see Jonas, he'll be a daddy

I got the sense that Sam seemed a little jealous that Jonas was seeing Kianna.
