I liked this episode. But one thing bugs me. Daniel wanted to go on the atlantis mission, he isn't a member of the militair, so why would he have to listen to O'neill (that was by the way a very funny scene) and not go. Weir would like to have him, so I don't see the problem.

As for the ancients, i missed what the hologram said. ANyone give me details. I got the jist of it but i woul like someonthing more complete?

also, i wonder (and maybe the hologram text answers this) did the ancients come to pegasus before or after the plague? is that why they left earth?

I missed about 15 minutes of this episode. How did they get Atlantis above water when they had barely enough power to sustain the forcefields below water. Did Major Shepard find another one of those ZPM's before coming back or did they use a generator to supplement power? Help!

My thoughts exactly. and it's the only logical one, really.

I forget who said this but whoever u r (think it was Vixen?) U R RIGHT!!!!! I AGREE COMPLETLY!!!!!!!!!! yet for some reason no one else has pointed this out/noticed this. They're a really stupid bad guy. The only cool thing they can do is read minds/mind control........and their ships were cool.

QUOTE (Muskusrat @ Jul 17 2004, 01:49 PM)
Well I just saw the first two episodes of Atlantis and I am a bit dissapointed. Sure the effects where ok but stoty was crap. I mean how is it possible that a sidewinder or even a para is capable of taking out one of those ships? I mean the wrath (or how you spell it) or miljons of years ahead in evolution and they still can not handle a simple rocket or a few bullets? Where are the energy shields surrounding the ships? I mean come on the ancients would kick there asses easily if they do not have shield (like that one ship that took out 5 of those fighters and it had a noobies pilot behind the stick). It doesn't make sense.

So from a story point it is total crap smile.gif. Special effect where ok but not that great. The worm hopper looks cheap those wrath things looked much better (but again where are the shields).

You are millions of years more advanced that a T-Rex but it would still kill you with one bite even if you had a gun[QUOTE]

QUOTE (Vixa @ Jul 17 2004, 11:57 AM)
It was just another "Children of the Gods" with Vampires as Gods...

oh, it isn't even that the wraiths are a variant villan from the "children of the gods" episode. I started thinking about what powers they have and I realized they are a variant on the Attavus beings from season four & five of Earth Final Conflict ! They even have the glowing hand that sucks the life force out of their prey. That's just way too close to be a coincidence.

I'd call the wraiths a combination of the following... the Attavus, Max Shrek's orginal portray of Nosferatu and Marilyn Manson. not too original if you ask me. but, this is only my own personal opinion.

still, I did like the first hour of the pilot. I think that Garwin Sanford was woefully underutilized as Dr Weir's husband. sigh....

I do like the Scots scientist, Dr Beckett. Although, I have one nitpick with him. I know he's supposed to be Scottish and he's wearing the flag of St Andrew to prove it. But, that's my point. Scotland IS part of the United Kingdom. Why wasn't he wearing the Union Jack ? That would be like someone from California wearing the state flag as a patch instead of the American flag. Everyone was wearing the flag of their countries on their shoulder. Shouldn't Beckett have worn a British flag ?

also, that's another reference to Earth Final Conflict. One of the characters was also named Beckett.

I know ... I know... this is nitpicking.

Actually, I really liked the special effects and CGI artwork. They did a nice job creating their version of atlantis. That was very cool. It did look good.

I honestly don't know if I'm going to like Major Sheppard. He reminds me too much of Colonel O'Neill. I really would have like it if they showed more of the conflict between himself and Colonel Sumner. It would have been interesting to see how they would or wouldn't resolve their differences over the course of the season.

As it is, SGA seems alittle too like SG-1 now. but, that's my own gripe. I'll enjoy seeing the rest of the season.

well i absolutely loved it, this will serve as a good replacement for sg1 when it finishes, like characters etc.. sounds like the atlantis people will be in for a hell of a fight whe the caretakers raise the rest of the wraith, they won't againist an enemy that destroyed the ancients they will need some worthy allies, maybe the furlings (only kidding rolleyes.gif ), i'm not going to nitpick at all coz i like it all.

dry.gif Maybe it will grow on me - but to be honest I wasn't blown away. I found Major Sheppard irratating and it was stupid that it was him that insisted on rescuing Robert Patrick as he was the only one who could fly them all out of there!!! If he had been captured/killed, they all would have been! - Stupid!! Having said that though I can see where the writers were coming from as he had to witness the Wraith to go back and tell everyone how $h!t scarey they were!

Although the puddle-jumper was bigger - I much preferred the old Jaffa ship from Into the Fire.

Saving grace: Dr Rodney McKay was fantastic! I posted some time ago that he would be the best regular guest star for the show - and lo and behold - shortly afterwards he was cast! To be honest I feel he will be the star of the show and the Daddy and backbone of the Atlantis Project!

Geez what can i say,

everything has been covered before me so i guess ill just reiterate what everyone else has said,

I was kinda worried about this spinoff, and i must say and i will be the first to admit that i didnt think the show would be all that good, but once again im comfortable enough to admit when im wrong, and well this is just another one of those times when im wrong (i should get used to it)

The First two episodes kicked some serious butt, The fact that we saw Jack as general for the first time was cool, i loved it when daniel was trying to go with the
expedition team and he kept saying NO, i must say it would have been COOL if DJ was in atlantis but hey you get that, and the other scientist was cool anyway!

Sheppard is a CHAMP!

and thats about it .. i think that atlantis will fill the void that stargate will leave!

it looks like this show is going to bomb.. because they have nonsuper human characters. It kinda lacks the Stargate spirit. It feels more like an Andromeda version of Stargate.

they have this warrior chick alien, that looks human and fights with sticks whats up with that is this like a Zena warrior camio.

you got this weapons expert who likes to shot stuff

cocky top gun Pilot.

as a comic relief you got this canadian Steve Erckle scientist..

I think this show needs another Daniel Jackson.. super human masrter of languages..

to me this show lacks that element.

Was there any discussion of the finding of the information that led to the Atlantis gate address? In the episode, DJ just says that they found out that what they had was an incomplete address. Was there any more talk about this that I missed?

First off, I was really impressed with the amount of money that was thrown at the pilot ep, especially with the sets and fx. The Antartic Base was very cool, cool.gif especially that mine shaft elevator. I'm guessing a lot of ice had to be melted to make it bigger, because the outpost underground certainly looked a LOT larger than what was seen in Lost City, to say nothing of that set-up on the surface.

I was surprised that the power source was still working after O'Neill used the weapon. Answers a few questions I had about it. Also loved those helicopter shots of the landscape. Absolutely gorgeous. Don't know where that was, but whoever was in that chopper must've had a grand time, and I'm jealous, 'cause I'd just get motion sick sick.gif if given the same chance and just make a mess.

Also, is the show shot digitally? I noticed it looked....different, especially when I was watching the preview of Jack and Daniel in front of the white board. Either that or the film was really sharp...hmm...

I forgot that the team was an international one until I saw all these people with different flag patches on their uniforms, including Russians. I hope this doesn't mean they're going to be 'red shirted' for the series.

The explanation on how they got Atlantis's cooridinates was either really quick or I just didn't catch it. I'm assuming they basically just found the info at the outpost and did some translating.

One of the other things that struck me was O'Neill's attitude about Sheppard not wanting to go through the gate. Granted, Sheppard had just learned about all this stuff, but I actually got the impression that O'Neill really likes going through the gate, especially during that brief scene they have in the helicopter before heading back to McMurdo. That's not something I've really ever picked up on before. I've always thought of him as more that he does it because he has to. Quite a little adventure junkie our Jack has turned into, eh? wink.gif

Also, the scenes in which the selected crew members spend their last days with family (or in McKay's case, his cat) before going off. What were they allowed to tell their family, I wonder?

Anyway that's it.

Well look at it this way, if SG-1 ends with Season 8 and SGA continues to a Season 2, Michael Shanks could always join SGA.

maybe the reason the wraith pilots that sheppard totally owned sucked so much because they have gotten complacent...think about it, after the ancients buggered off, who would be around to challenge them? how many million years has it been? and its not like it took a great deal of skill to blow them out of space...sheppard just thought "weapons" and the high tech ancient ship automatically started shooting swarms of drones at anything that moved...as for the m249 taking a chunk out of the wraith ship...who knows...

did stike me as odd that at the end (of part 2) the 2 guys with the rocket launchers were standing so close to the puddle jumper...wouldnt the backblast from firing those things kinda make everyone in the ship extra crispy?

and was it just me, or did the male ancient in the intro bear a passing resemblence to apophis? im pretty sure it wasnt the same actor (unless the casting director has a really evil sense of humour) but it sure had me going for a minute there

Okay there is NO WAY you can compare Scotland to a state! mad.gif

Yes it is part of Britain but Scotland is still an individual country and as, a civillian scientist, Dr. Beckett could probably chose whether he wanted the soltaire or the union jack as his arm patch. I mean, you get the choice of Scottish or British flag on your car lisence plate here.

I know i'd rather have the Scottish flag and i'm thinking so would most Scots.

QUOTE
eolithic1500bc Posted: Jul 17 2004, 08:32 PM

The Ancients were not killed off by the Wraith. They were infected with a disease long before they ran into the them. They left there sick behind and left to start over in another galaxy free of the plague that was killing them. Then they ran into the Wraith who put up a fight they werent prepared for so they sank Atlantis and fled through the gate back to Earth. But what i dont get is why they wouldnt just take Alantis to a new glaxy and try to start over again.

I like that explanation the best.

SO lets build a timeline here. Ancients were from Earth. Spread the seed of life throughout the galaxy. Made the stargate system. Went to the NEW galaxy, and continued.

1. why do the stargates of this galaxy look different than others?
- no naquadah? Different materials from different galaxies. Maybe just a different look? Our galaxies stargates is the 1980's version (of a car) and Pegasus has the 1990's ? Just simple upgrades. Once they realized they needed to move more places, made different gates, but i'll go with the materials available from each galaxy.

2. So from what the hologram said.. they spread and spread and the bumped into the wraith. I like what eolithic said about how they were diseased before they met wraith. Thats why they were outnumbered. In the begining we see the male ancient looking at the girl kinda meanly, and she seemed sad. It seems like what you said about she was diseased (explains how when she was unfrozen everyone started getting sick), also she wishes she could join the fight perhaps? He was leaving earth to join the fight against the wraith.

So with their numbers getting lower and lower they retreated to where the atlantis place was.. bomarded and traped, they couldn't lift off. Perhaps shields need to be droped to lift off, OR the wraith could just follow them whereever they go. SO they went under, few went back to earth, some stayed. Acension begins. ect ect

Final thoughts..
ANcients are still alive in an ascended plane. They can be anywhere tehy want and watch anything that happens. They MUST know the SG teams reached their city. Perhaps when they see their city is directly threated they might step in.

I find it so intriguing, the whole storyline. I must have watched the first 6 0seconds over and over again. Just thinking about all this. How she is frozen in the ice. Perhaps she knew she was going to die, froze herself.. until perhaps until her people could return for her, and help her condition. Instead she mets daniel heh.

I don't remember but can't daniel become an ancient again if he wanted to ? or is he baned?

just to add that I know most agree on... after the ancients MAIN populations were "eaten" by the Wraith, and not a large amoutn of population to sustain them, they went into hibernation, with the caretakers to monitor them for when they would be able to strike again. Shows that Earth is the only planet around with "billions" of humans. Every other planet has small pockets. Not enough to feed the whole wraith contingent.

ALso when people ask why the ancients left our galaxy. Perhaps the wraith had a way to track ancients or something along those lines. The ancients left our galaxy 1. to help protect their own. 2. so the wraith wouldn't come and destory our galaxy where the ancients had their alliance (nox furlings, asguard). A =sacrifice the ancients made.. which thor seemed sad about when he talked about it.

someone just brought up to me when reading htis.. then why didnt the wraith track them to earth if they can track ancients.

answer if it applies to the theory - the ancients on earth lived normal lives, no technology. Same way daniel said the info sliped to the ancient greeks. They integrated with current life. Never discloing who they were or using their technology again.

Only seen first 20mins, but the best quote

MS - "They Packed Up and Left Somewhere between 5 Million Years Ago"

RDA - "In There Flying City"

MS - "Yes.... What"

RDA - "Flying City??"

Not Bad So far though it would have been corny with thouse new uniforms... not to bad though

Can wait for it to air in the UK
