I don't see why you're being so petty - rather than countering Rogue's arguments, you're attacking the way in which he words them. Sure, euphemism was the wrong word to use (and it was mispelled As for your criticism of the use of the word "ultimate" - it does have more than one meaning, you know. Such as "Of the greatest possible size or significance" or "Fundamental; elemental" - both of which are adequate to use to describe the "true" origin of Atlantis. Sure, it was weak to say Atlantis was "originally" from Earth when it was probably built somewhere else (its ultimate origin Okay, his arguments could have been worded more accurately - but I highly doubt you had extreme trouble understanding what he was trying to convey. I mean come on, even Revan let it slide! (sorry Revan... I pointed out the euphamism thing was that it appeared was trying to make himself sound smart, while misspelling the word and using it incorrectly. Then I pointed it out, he said, you can twist the meaning to fit however you like. If he is going to acknowledge that he is twisting meanings to fit his opinion there is no point in listening to the support of the opinion Then he did it a second time with the original ultimate, so I was through. I don't need to go to Wiki to learn about fallacies, I did it extremly well in college. Words are important. If we are going to use English on this forum, then we need to use the standard English definitions of words. |

Where's your evidence that 50% of British soldiers killed were shot by Americans? THat's a huge number and a terrible claim especially if you don't have any evidence. I would believe any country that had as many loses from another would consider that an act of war. If you are gonna make those types of claims, you better have some factual evidence to back yourself up. That's almost as silly as saying monkeys and apes rule the planet. EDIT: Oh wait, you did say that I wouldn't know, becasue when I said, "...I'm done readings you're posts regarding this topic." I was done reading his posts in this topic. when I said half I didn't actually mean half, over here it's a figure of speach basically meaning that the yanks can't shoot for sh*t and when they do actually hit something it's quite often the people who are on their side, why do you think britain is pulling out of Iraq and Afganistan. |

Ugh, I don't want to get dragged into this...I just think you're being a bit overbearing. Instead of focusing on the arguments, you're criticising how they're worded - and because of a few (what is it, two?) questionable word choices, you're sweeping all of Rogue's points away as "tainted". That doesn't seem like very good logic - it seems like some perverse form of attacking the arguer, rather than the argument. Fair enough if you don't have the energy/desire to comb through every one of Rogue's arguments to make sure they are structurally and formally accurate (just to be sure!), but it's not really fair to dismiss them outright.
I'm not really so sure why this is being debated so fiercely. |

Let's not hijack the thread any further, but maybe it's because they (like the US) shouldn't really be there anyway. I would put a bubble around my office, stand right outside of it, let 8 hours go by, and then go in and log out. This post has been edited by JTMAG1: Sep 28th 2007, 12:40 PM |

EDIT: When you use poor reasoning, it should taint your whole argument. Poor choice of words shouldn't be equated with poor reasoning. Rogue already admitted that "metaphor" would be a better word than euphemism - if you put that word in, his argument still stands. His choice of "euphemism" was entirely unrelated to the actual content of his argument. And now I'm stepping back. |

(sorry Revan... I don't know why anybody thinks words cannot be stretched to suit any given person's meaning... The nature of words and meanings and the relationship therein tends to allow a great amount of 'wiggle room'. Curses! I think that in order to communicate in writing, we have to agree to use the same definitions of words. If the words you use don't mean what everyone else thinks they mean, you aren't speaking the same language. I never read Moby Dick, I should probably get on that. |

That is a potential problem with an internationally visited website. It isn't all that wonderful... like 13 or 16 chapters of it (in the middle) are insignificant menutia about whaling and sailing... |

I just spent over $5000 on Lasik Eye Surgery. I don't think that's it damn you'll go blind in a few yrs after that. cause what they don't say is that your eyes are constantly changing and laser surgery permantly changes your eyes into a certain way that won't change ever again. |

Unless they made a boo-boo... If they made a boo-boo. I'd know. When you make a boo-boo with a million dollar laser, it does pernament damage :-P damn you'll go blind in a few yrs after that. cause what they don't say is that your eyes are constantly changing and laser surgery permantly changes your eyes into a certain way that won't change ever again. They told me that actually. The part they cut still grows with the rest of your eye. I know the surgery isn't pernament. But I'm young and it benefits me much greatly than an older gentleman who's eyes degrade much faster than mine. Mine wore out from sitting too cloe to the TV when I was younger :-P So I have plenty of time to enjoy it. Plus, they said my eyes were thick enough to do the sugery again if my eyes get really bad again when I get old (I won't be doing that though). |

Where are we agian? Oh ya, the Science and Tech forums. In science and math a half means 1/2, 0.500000 exactly one half. Just like a billion means one billion (not just a big number). People shouldn't use numbers if the don't know how to use them. Please stick to integers between 0 and 100. Easy enough. |

I have decided that I want Atlantis, or at least an Aurora class starship, even if its fugly.
Do those each count as "one single thing?" |
