Oh wow... What is Scifi thinking??? First, they break up their star lineup on Friday night, then they cancel their flagship show, and now make insanely huge changes to a show that was doing very well in the ratings just as it was?? I'm wondering how they're going to successfully integrate all these changes, but possibly judgment should be reserved, seeing as how they managed to revitalize SG1 by adding new characters and all new storylines. We'll see... Can't SciFi only be held responsible for airing the show... all other choices are made by MGM and TPTB... |

Yes, TPTB are responsible for cast changes not Sci-Fi. In the past, a character being reduced to recurring role has meant TPTB aren't happy with the character and were preparing to get rid of him/her.

TBH TPTB might not be completely repsonsible for all the changes.
SciFi have the power to demand things, as they finance the show. I won't be surprsied if the scenario went somethign liek this - SciFi cancelling SG1 but renewing SGA,m and demanding one of the SG1 characters be transferred to SGA to boost ratings. Decision falls on AT because she's already udner contract for another season and Carter makes sense in SGA, etc etc etc. Only, she's way too expansive for them for their shrinking budget, now that they can't play with the budget for both shows. So, as a result they realise they can't keep all the SGA cast and someone has to go. So, yeah, TPTB's call, btu not quite... (obviuosly, I've n9o idea what really happened and why Weir has been reduced to recurring....) |

Well I do know forinstace that the reason that the prometheus was in the episode Memento was because sci fi 'asked' them in include it in another episode (presumably to open up options of a spin off at the time). But they do have influence pitry's right. Cast changes like BB coming to sg1 were the producers decision though, but any cast changes to my knowledge get run by sci fi first for their approval.
Apparently sci fi weren't too keen on the idea of Ronan being an alien either, as they felt it would make there be too many aliens, but they managed to compromise and make him military from another planet and therefore ok apparently. |

Whoops, yeah...my bad. So I shall have to split my ire between scifi interfering with the Friday night line up and TPTB messing about with a perfectly good formula. But yeah, in any case...it seems like their decisions have resulted in lower ratings and fan disgruntlement (is that a word?). Way to go!!\ I liked Weir too. She was coming along. Why is it that all the really good characters on these shows are guys? I don't know why Weir couldn't have been written as the neurotic, brilliant, snarky McKay. You don't have to be "by the book" to be a good leader as shown by O'Neill, but somehow the writers have decided if you're a woman you have to be blah, goody two shoes, and passionless. It's like the whore/madonna complex applied to female characters in science fiction. I'd like to see a saucy wench, brilliant, arrogant, and self aware, running Atlantis. Now that would be fun! |

I don't wander into this part of the forum very often, not being a huge Atlantis fan, but I was intrigued enough to know if it were true that Beckett was going. Imagine my amazement that not only was he (my favorite character) going but so was Weir, practically. I admit it took me awhile to warm up to the character of Weir, some of Torri's best scenes were in 'Lost City' as her character fumbled to figure out her role in the SGC.
Like Xay, it is getting harder and harder for me to get excited about this franchise. Will I tune in on Friday nights just to watch this? Well, I forgot to tune in Sunday to watch BSG so I suspect that may happen to this show, too. |

That was... Jessica Steed, I think... |

Tbh I really liked Steen, and thought it was going to be bad them replacing her. But after about 5 seconds of Higginson I prefered her, there was just something about her, I really liked it.
I do admit though that they did develop her better in new order then they did in a lot of atlantis's early on. Although they've gotten better and her character doesn't feel filler anymore (although I did always quite like her, but she feels like she has a proper role now). SGA will follow the new sg1's in april though, so some of them won't be too hard to just not turn the channel lol. But there are a couple there that I would definately say watch, even if you're not too big a fan of the show... |

Do we know weather Torri's role will be a Hammond-type role (Always around but only appears for the briefings and such) or is she being removed form Atlantis and the reaccuring episodes have her returning, EG Caldwell & The Daedalus?

Let's face it. The Stargate story has been going on for what? Over 10 years now? It is getting harder and harder to come up with story lines. All shows eventually end because of this.

Sci fi putting out word on it, yay. I like the fact that they always say stuff and act as if they're reporting it as brand new But still it is a bit interesting to read comparred to gateworlds article which paraphrased a lot of it incorrectly.
Also says that the 4th season 'will comence in the fall', suspected about as much. This way sga + bsg can run alongside together. This post has been edited by Invisible Painting: Feb 20th 2007, 4:39 PM |
