Eh, I know I seem like the harsh bitchy mod, but someone's gotta do it, and if you ask the people who have been here a long time I'm not that bad, just moody and kinda strict.

Ok, now that you two kissed and made up (sarcasm) , I?m gonna delete the little mad baby in ?General discussion? because it hurts my eyes.

Also, sunspark, the PM function is enabled on this board.

Is rank given to you based on the number of posts? If so, at what points do you get promoted? Where can I go to find out this info?

Welcome - you can find the answer to your question HERE.
Just remember it's not the quantity of posts that's important, but the quality --- Rookie

I am going to suggest that some of the moderators be asked to refrain from rudeness to anyone having the temerity to venture onto these boards.

It is unnecessary and will not add to the general success of the boards.

As I have just explained to one of them, "double posting" has a different meaning on other boards. I've been using BBs since they were invented. "Double posting" means posting the SAME message in more than one place, not posting two messages in a row.

look, it doesn't matter what the definition is on other message boards, only this one. we clearly define it in the rules of the message board, but if you insist on complaining about the rules of THIS board, no one is forcing you to stay. thank you for your compliance.

in all fairness, the attempts to remove 'double posting' on this board is just a desire to be able to help clean up the board. it is common decency to gather all your thoughts together to make it easier for other people to read it, and there is usually very little reason to actually HAVE two posts in a row.

besides, it doesn't HURT to use the edit button.

I do agree with you thought that Odin (Who I'm pretty sure you're refering to) could be a little more subtle about it, but the sheer amount of he has deleted, has probably gotten to him.

it can be discouraging to be new, and have the older people get on your case, but then again, the rules on the board are a conglomeration of the general views of the regulars who come in here, not the desires of people who come in to bitch about the way it's run

if you've been here two days, I would suggest you try to get and know these people, and understand where they are coming from before making a complaint about them. if you arn't happy, then there are alternatives

Please understand that had THAT definition of the rule been clearly stated, we would not be having this discussion. Allow me, very politely, to suggest that some revision in the "Read This First" section might help clear up the problem. Allow me also, still very politely, to suggest that the very fact the boards are having the problem indicates that I'm not the only confused newbie.

I read somewhere in the newbie section a post by a moderator of another set of boards. I think his/her suggestion was a good one. The first offense (and I would include in that any posts made within the first few days of joining the discussion) ought to be handled with a private email message EXPLAINING what the newbie has done wrong and HOW to avoid the mistake in the future, not just a violent condemnation of the newbie.

As someone may have pointed out (I know I do in the classes I teach), on the Net all we have is the written word - no facial expressions, no tone of voice, no body language. Clarity is essential.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hutchy

BTW - I have just discovered that I am unable to make a modification to a post I wrote yesterday. There is no EDIT button and no one has responded, but I want to add an addendum. So I would be posting after myself - more than 24 hours after myself. I've had time to think since then.

Do y'all consider this a BAD thing? unsure.gif

This discussion should really be between the mods and Hutchy.

QUOTE
1. Spam posts and multiple-posting - many people find it annoying if you come in and type three word replies in every thread. We've set up a chat feature for people who prefer to communicate this way. Also, there is an ?Edit? button in the top-right of every newly-added post, which will allow you to edit it several times over a period of time provided you made a mistake, you left something out, or it doesn?t show properly.

Your multiple posting is meantioned here as being against the rules. There is no clearly defined universal set of terms on the net, so it can be confusing, I agree. You meant no disrespect, I know, and I commend you for showing maturity in your complaints. Many issues are addressed with the individual behind the scenes, but unfortunately, we've had so many spammers and trolls around lately, it help to sometimes publicly let others know what is being done wrong.

If you feel you have been treated unfairly, feel free to PM a mod, if you have a problem with a particular mod, feel free to PM another mod or the site Administrator - Arcady.
Mods can mess up also, so feel free to let us know what's up. cool.gif
Some mods live in bad places such as Korea, New York and Hollywood, and we all know how crazy those Hollywood mods can get. whistling.gif

The edit feature has unfortunately been shortened on the new server( we used to have several hours to edit our posts). The rules are not absolute, and some leeway is allowed, but it is best to get to know a group before trying to bend the rules.

EDIT:+Ok, I just went ahead and merged it to the thread.
Any suggestions or complaints you have can be posted in this thread, and I encourage you to do so, as you seem to have a lot to offer this community.

(I am able to edit anything, so I didn't notice that the time limit for user edits was changed. I'll fix that.)

Edit: Actually, I just checked, and users should have 12 hours to edit their messages now.

if you are unable to edit the post, and nobody has posted after you, as long as the edit time has expired it shouldnt be a problem. I've done that several times in the Technology index.

but we all ask that everyboy ue their edit buttons when possible

What...Why do you automatically think it was me? wink.gif

Well it was.

Hutchy you said there sould be somewhere you can read the rules?????

Uh dude! did you see the sticky's everywhere saying Forum Rules....must be read

I think this is all that is needed. If you don't read the rules and then break them...tough sh*t.

I complain to everyone about spam and double posting. The reason I was a little harsh on this Hutchy guy was because get this

Yesterday he had 20 posts.

10 of them were in the form of double posts. 6 of them were in the form of triple posts.

I sent this guy a message the first time I noticed.......Like first day he was posting.

Something like "Please don't double post if you think of something else to add to your post after it is posted...hit the edit button on the top right of the post. If you have any other questions Ask me or another Mod."

Usually my first PM to someone has a please or a thanks somewhere in it. That is my definitin of politeness (unless the person is a total ass)

If I'm telling Hutchy to add something to prevent double posting....obviously I mean something different that his definition of a double post (and telling him to ask me or a Mod questions is needed).

The guy didn't ask me and as far as I know...no one else. He didn't read the rules....so why is this guy bitching.....does he need his mommy to lead him around by the hand and show him where the rules are?

Hey Arcady...you wanna be this guys mommy?

And I recall someone trying to sneek this line by "Some mods live in bad places such as Korea, New York and Hollywood, and we all know how crazy those Hollywood mods can get. "

Hell Rookie you are right. Some Mods live in these evil places....but it's better than a boring little place like Virginia.... whistling.gif

Maybe a few more from Texas would help. whistling.gif

I don't see a problem here. Odin's doing a great job. Keep deleting the spam and the spammers will stop spamming. Case in point, we had someone spamming a lot in Polls last month and Odin kept deleting the spam. After a bunch of deletions, I haven't seen the guy back for a while now.

People need to read the rules before posting, plain and simple. They're in every section near the top of the page. If you break the rules, you will be dealt with. If you can't handle it, go home and cry to momma.

BTW, I haven't seen our designated spammer, Alexh, in quite a while. Maybe it was something we did........... biggrin.gif

No, but just a few minutes ago we were all disconnected as the server kind of died... try again smile.gif

I've also noticed that the DNS for irc.wikkedwire.com keeps going up and down lately which would stop you connecting too... just keep trying smile.gif

So I'm thinking back to the days of Macgyver2 here. Once while reading a string somebody quoted a long post in their response and was later asked to try not to quote full-sized posts (I guess to save room). Ever since reading this I have only been trying to quote single sentence quotes in my responses. This, however, seems to not work perfectly; as sometimes the people I'm quoting get fustrated since it may seem that I'm picking out unsupported bits of their arguements making it sound as if they said something that they didn't. So I would just like some clarification on what size my quotes should be (I am already aware that quoting quotes and pics are bad); should it be the full post out of respect for the person that I'm quoting, or should I continue to only quote the exact sentence that I am responding to in order to save space?

Quote enough to make your reply make sense. If you are replying directly below the message, you really don't need much of a quote. If you are replying with multiple messages in between, then a larger quote is needed. Just pretend that you are reading the message as someone who had never seen the thread before. It's just common sense rules; nothing is set in stone here.

Hey Odin....*snicker* Arcady being the guys mummy... more like 'daddy' i think....j/k

Okay, my questionis just a slight why here...I was checking how many posts I had since last time, curiosity, and they hadn't changed, I was continuosly stuck on 91. Just curious as to why, was it just me, or was something else happening, or what??? Because I am seriously confused, trying to think about it, and I'm almost straining something here...ow

ok, I'm now on 92, but I was on 91 for about 10 posts....strange really

Some sections of the forums don't count towards your post count. For example, if you post in any of the games in the games sections then your post count won't increase... I suspect this is what you are confused about as I notice you do post a lot in games. Hope this helps to explain things smile.gif

I have a question. I've been looking for the answer in the FAQ-topics, but I couldn't find it.

I've been away for a few days and when I logged in and clicked on "View New Posts" I had about 16 pages of new posts. I couldn't read everything at once and I had to log back out.
Now, I logged back in and after clicking on "View New Posts" (I wanted to continue reading what I missed these few days) the "old" new posts were all gone. Is there something I did wrong or is this the way it is ?

That's the way it is... it happens to me too. I think clicking the 'View New Posts' only displays all new posts since you last logged in, so if you log out then you lose all the ones between then and your last login. Unfortunately, I don't think that there is any way around it sad.gif If there is then I would sure like to know wink.gif

If you remember the date of the newest post that you had read then I guess you can just browse through each section looking for posts since that date if you really want to read every post since then.
