There is not much info about this episode. Here are a couple of bits of info from GateWorld:

"Yes, we will see some female Wraith this season -- most notably in an episode called 'Instinct.'"
(Stargate writer Martin Gero)

"Check out a very interesting female wraith character in 'Instinct,' played by Firefly's wonderful Jewel Staite.
(Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi)

Are there such things as nice Wraith? "Oddly enough ... yes. Check out an episode in Season Two called 'Instinct.'"
(Stargate writer Martin Gero)

Hmm, I though we already saw a female Wraith in the first episode. Sure looked feminine anyway, the one in the pink?

But even so, I'd like to see who this "nice" wraith is!

The following is from Gateworld. Interesting stuff:
QUOTE(Gateworld)
'Instinct' delves into Wraith biology
WEDNESDAY - JULY 13, 2005

An upcoming episode of Stargate Atlantis will explore the biology and development of the evil Wraith. Now, in The SCI FI Channel's new behind-the-scenes special "SCI FI Inside: SCI FI Friday," actress Torri Higginson shared a bit about the premise of Season Two's "Instinct."

"We actually just shot an episode where there was a child Wraith," Higginson said. "We're talking about how the Wraith are half-human, half-bug. ... The human attributes sort of are stronger the first 15 years of their life, and then they are weaned into life-sucking."

The Atlantis team encounters just such a young Wraith in the episode.

SCI FI's special also showed the first look at the female Wraith character, played by actress Jewel Staite (Firefly).

The insect creatures that share an evolutionary history with the Wraith were introduced in Season One's "Thirty Eight Minutes." Dr. Beckett theorized in "The Gift" that the Wraith evolved when the Ancients seeded the bug's planet with human life; when the bugs fed on human life-force, it somehow incorporated human DNA into its make-up.

So, finally, from the horses mouth, the Wraith evolved from the bugs in '38 Minutes'.

blink.gif I'm sorry, care to tell us how you got that? The end of the article mentioned "Thirty-Eight Minutes," but, IIRC, that was not mentioned in the lowdown. IOW, that's GateWorld's speculation.

Read the post again and you'll see that Tori Higginson said "We're talking about how the Wraith are half-human, half-bug".

The people whose DNA was incorporated with the bugs' undoubtedly had some tech around, if they ever got checked in on by the Ancients (who were busily seeding that galaxy, still being pre-Wraith, right?). The primitive Wraith (I'm assuming they evolved somewhat from their original bug/person-ness to their currently advanced state, since they did play with gene-manipulation) would have adapted that tech to their own needs as they advanced.
Someone please correct the excessive assumptions I've made before I make too much of an ass of myself!

Anyone remember the ruins of the old city on Teyla's home planet? Perhaps there are more ruins such as this, and they were "ruined" before the Wraith became a space faring species, they slowly built up their forces before confronting the Ancients directly in open combat, ala Rebel Alliance in Star Wars.

Also there's this... the interview done with Jewel Staite (the actress that plays the female wraith) for the Stargate Project website.

I keep trying to look to see what the Wraith is doing but can't see for definite.

They can't fly, So he's either suspended in a trap, Is jumping down from a tree to ambush them or perhaps he's been hit by the other Wraith & has been launched back into the trees.

The other Wraith female looks very menacing.

She does not look Wraith. She looks like a half breed. Like a wraith was trapped and found a lover among the natives and had a child with that person. She looks a mix of wraith and something else.

I was also thinking this Em. Her hands are different from a normal Wraith and her face is a half blue-ish colour. She is definatley a half breed.
